Die Musik des experimentellen Jazz-Punk-Trios The Messthetics aus Washington DC, bestehend aus ehemaligen Mitgliedern der Punk-Band Fugazi (Bassist Joe Lally, Schlagzeuger Brendan Canty und Gitarrist Anthony Pirog) wurde bereits mit dem ungewöhnlichen Genre-Label „Jazz-Punk-Jam“ versehen. Auf ihrem ersten Album für das ikonische Impulse!-Label haben die drei sich jetzt mit Jazz-Saxofonist, Komponist und Bandleader James Brandon Lewis zusammengetan.

Das erste Album der Band mit dem Titel „The Messthetics“, live aufgenommen in Brendan Cantys Übungsraum, wurde 2018 vom Dischord-Label veröffentlicht. Das Nachfolgealbum „Anthropocosmic Nest“ erschien ein Jahr später und wurde in der Kategorie „The Best Punk on Bandcamp“ geführt.

James Brandon Lewis ist ein in New York ansässiger Jazz-Tenorsaxofonist, Komponist und Bandleader. Seine Musik verbindet die emotionale Kraft des Gospels, den Groove von Blues und R&B mit den modalen, avantgardistischen Einflüssen von Albert Ayler und John Coltrane. Beim Down Beat Critics Poll 2020 wurde Lewis Sieger in der Kategorie „Tenorsaxofon (Rising Star)“. Beim Deutschen Jazzpreis 2023 wurde sein Quartett als „Band des Jahres international“ ausgezeichnet
